Best HSA/FSA Products for Fitness Enthusiasts

The recovery gear that used to live in pro training rooms is now home gear, and much of it can come out of your HSA or FSA with no paperwork at all. Here is what qualifies for someone who trains hard, what needs an LMN, and the one line the IRS won't cross.

The quick answer

Can you use your HSA or FSA for fitness gear?

Yes for recovery gear, first aid and sun care; training equipment needs an LMN.

Exercise for general fitness never qualifies, even if your doctor recommends it. Equipment like a cold plunge qualifies with a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) for a diagnosed condition.

Estimated pre-tax savings: about $4 to $2,097 per item, at a 30% combined tax rate.

Caeli handles the LMN at checkout: a telehealth intake in under 3 minutes.

Training & your benefits

Recovery, yes. Fitness itself, no

Compression boots, percussion massagers and cold plunges used to be training-room equipment. Now they fit in a closet, from Hyperice's Normatec boots to Therabody's Theragun. A lot of what a serious athlete already wants can come out of an HSA or FSA, and much of it needs no paperwork.

The line the IRS draws is simple. Medical care covers the "mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease", and Publication 502 excludes anything "merely beneficial to general health." Its wellness FAQ is blunt about exercise for general health: it doesn't qualify, "even if recommended by a doctor." So your benefits don't pay for getting fitter. They pay for treating what training does to it: sore muscles, blisters, sunburn, aching arches.

In practice that splits into three groups. Recovery and pain-relief devices, first aid, sunscreen and orthotics are eligible outright, and the shop badges each one. Training equipment and cold plunges qualify with an LMN tying them to a diagnosed condition, such as low back pain, joint pain or an ankle sprain. And a heart-rate strap or other tracker qualifies when you buy it for a diagnosed condition or on a clinician's recommendation, not to chase a faster 10K.

How an LMN works

Usually an LMN means a doctor's appointment, often a co-pay, and a request for the letter. With Caeli it happens at checkout: a telehealth intake in under 3 minutes, and a licensed clinician reviews and signs, usually in minutes. The LMN is dated before you buy, names your condition, and covers the product and similar ones for 12 months. The conditions below are common examples, not the full list.

Conditions a clinician can cite include:

  • Low back pain
  • Ankle sprain
  • Overuse soft-tissue disorder
  • Joint pain
  • Osteoarthritis

You don't have to memorize which is which. On the product you are looking at, Caeli shows whether your benefits cover it and handles the LMN when one is needed.

With a diagnosis

What one diagnosis can add to your training

If you do have a diagnosed condition, it can reach further. Low back pain, joint pain and an ankle sprain are on the list for cold plunges and for exercise equipment alike, so one diagnosis can support a plunge and a strength machine such as the Tonal 2 in our guide to big-ticket buys. Two smaller buys need no LMN at all.

Hyperice Hypervolt Go 3

Hyperice Hypervolt Go 3

A massager that fits in your gym bag

Before you claim

Two details for the paperwork

A cold plunge or a strength machine is a dual-use item. Read strictly, Publication 502 counts only "the excess of the cost of the item in a special form over the cost of the item in normal form"; in practice most administrators process the full price against a valid LMN, and your plan administrator can tell you how they treat it. Memberships that come with some equipment are a separate cost: the IRS allows one only for a specific diagnosed purpose, so check how your plan treats it.

Keep the itemized receipt, and the LMN where one is needed, dated before you buy; that is what a claim or an audit asks for. Buy through Caeli and that part is done for you: every Buy-with-Benefits purchase is vaulted in the Reimbursement Vault, itemized and audit-ready.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is a Theragun HSA/FSA eligible?

Yes. A massage gun is sold to relieve muscle aches and pain, which counts as medical care, and the Theragun PRO Plus and the Hypervolt Go 3 need no LMN. You can pay with your HSA or FSA card in the Caeli shop.

Can I buy a Peloton or Tonal with my HSA or FSA?

The Tonal 2 and Peloton's Tread, Tread+ and Row+ qualify with an LMN for a diagnosed condition, such as low back pain, osteoarthritis or obesity; the Peloton Bike+ may be covered by an LSA instead, depending on your employer's plan. Equipment bought to get fitter does not qualify, and the monthly membership is a separate cost.

Is a gym membership HSA/FSA eligible?

Usually not. The IRS allows it only for a specific medical purpose, such as a prescribed physical therapy plan or a diagnosed disease. For general fitness, check whether your employer offers an LSA.

Is my heart-rate strap or fitness tracker eligible?

It qualifies when you buy and use it primarily for a diagnosed condition, or on a clinician's recommendation. A general wish to track or improve your fitness is not enough, and no LMN is required.

Can I use my FSA for sunscreen?

Yes. Sunscreen is regulated as an over-the-counter drug, and the FDA advises broad-spectrum SPF 15 or higher. No LMN is needed.
