The Best Buy HSA/FSA Guide: How to Use Your Benefits on Health Tech (2026)

Best Buy doesn't list HSA or FSA cards among its payment methods, and benefit cards often decline there. But much of the health tech it sells is eligible: air purifiers, smart scales, open-ear headphones and treadmills, with a Letter of Medical Necessity, plus earbuds, rings and recovery gear without one. Here's how to buy them pre-tax.

The quick answer

Can you use your HSA or FSA at Best Buy?

Not reliably at its checkout. Through Caeli, yes.

Best Buy doesn't list HSA or FSA cards as payment, and they often decline there. Much of its health tech still qualifies, some with a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN). Caeli gets the LMN and takes the card.

Best Buy and your benefits

Best Buy's checkout says no. The IRS often says yes.

Best Buy is where a lot of health tech lives now: Dyson and Blueair purifiers, Withings scales, SHOKZ open-ear headphones, NordicTrack treadmills, AirPods, Apple Watch, Oura, Theragun. Much of it is premium, which is exactly where paying with pre-tax dollars helps most: roughly 30% back, depending on your bracket.

Here's the usual story. Spring allergies have you waking up congested, you pick out a purifier at Best Buy, and your HSA card is declined at checkout. So you pay with your personal card and assume that settles it: the purifier doesn't count. It doesn't settle it. The decline says something about Best Buy's checkout, not about what the IRS lets your HSA or FSA pay for.

An air purifier, a smart scale or a pair of open-ear headphones is medical care when you buy it for a diagnosed condition, like asthma, obesity or tinnitus, and a Letter of Medical Necessity from a clinician is the record that says so. Best Buy has no way to take that letter, or often the card. Caeli does both, and you don't have to remember any of the rules: with the extension installed, the product page you're on shows whether your benefits cover it.

Natively

What Best Buy's checkout does with a benefit card

Best Buy's payment options don't include HSA or FSA cards, and it has no HSA or FSA eligible badge or filter of its own: where a product page mentions HSA or FSA, that's the brand's copy, not a Best Buy check. Best Buy also isn't on the industry's (SIGIS) list of stores whose checkout can tell eligible items from the rest. Since 2008, FSA and HRA cards generally work only at stores that can (IRS Notice 2007-2), which is why they so often decline there.

Some HSA debit cards do go through, because the bank treats them like any debit card. Then nothing checked the cart, and it's on you to keep the receipt and show the purchase was eligible. Online, Best Buy takes one card per order, so a benefit card can't cover part of a cart and a personal card the rest. Best Buy does publish a guide to what HSA and FSA funds can buy: hearing aids, blood pressure monitors, thermometers, TENS units. It leaves the IRS rules and your plan to you.

These six need no LMN, though Best Buy's checkout can still turn your card down. Buy them with your benefit card in the Caeli shop or at Best Buy through each card's Checkout with Caeli button. The ring and the watch, like any wearable, qualify when you buy them for a diagnosed condition or on a clinician's recommendation.

A declined card at Best Buy is about the store's checkout. It is not a verdict on the product.

Where checkout stops

The Best Buy products that need an LMN

Under IRS Publication 502, an everyday product bought for a medical condition can be medical care: an air purifier for asthma, a scale for obesity, open-ear headphones for tinnitus, a treadmill for type 2 diabetes. What makes it medical is your diagnosis, and the LMN is how you show it. No store's checkout can see your diagnosis, and Best Buy's has no place for the letter.

The usual workaround is slow. You book a doctor's visit, often with a co-pay, ask for the letter, pay on your own card, print the receipt from your Best Buy order details and file a claim with your plan. Caeli removes most of that: the LMN comes from a telehealth intake during checkout, the payment comes from your benefit card, and the receipt and LMN are kept together for you.

The how-to

How to use your HSA or FSA at Best Buy

Browse as usual. Add the free Caeli extension and shop BestBuy.com the way you always do.

See what's covered, on the page. On each product, Caeli shows whether your benefits cover it, including items that need an LMN, which Best Buy never marks.

Get the LMN at checkout. If the product needs an LMN, Caeli runs a telehealth intake right in the checkout: under 3 minutes, then a licensed clinician reviews and signs, usually in minutes. The LMN is dated before you buy.

Pay with benefit dollars. You pay with your HSA or FSA card, with no markup on Best Buy's price, even though Best Buy doesn't take the card itself. Caeli buys the item from Best Buy for you and Best Buy delivers it. Returns follow Best Buy's policy; reply to your Caeli order confirmation email to start one.

How an LMN works

Usually an LMN means a doctor's appointment, often a co-pay, and asking for the letter. With Caeli it happens at checkout, for every LMN pick on this page: a telehealth intake in under 3 minutes, then a licensed clinician reviews and signs, usually in minutes. One LMN covers the product and similar ones for 12 months. These conditions are common examples, not the full list.

Conditions a clinician can cite include:

  • Allergic rhinitis
  • Asthma
  • Obesity
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Tinnitus
  • Hearing loss
  • Migraine

Beyond the picks

Get more out of every Best Buy order

Best Buy's big sales, like Black Friday, are a good moment to check what your benefits cover: the tax saving applies to whatever price you pay. Our over-$500 picks cover the bigger buys.

For a dual-use item like a purifier or a treadmill, read strictly, Publication 502 counts only the cost above an ordinary version, though most plan administrators process the full price against a valid LMN. Keep the itemized receipt and the LMN, dated before you buy. Buy through Caeli and that part is done: every Buy-with-Benefits purchase is vaulted, itemized and audit-ready.

Questions

Frequently asked

Does Best Buy accept HSA or FSA cards?

Not as a listed payment method. Best Buy isn't set up to separate eligible items at checkout, so FSA cards often decline, while some HSA debit cards go through like ordinary debit cards. Caeli lets you pay with your benefit card for eligible Best Buy products either way.

Why was my HSA or FSA card declined at Best Buy?

Most likely because Best Buy isn't on the industry's list of stores whose checkout can tell eligible items from the rest, and benefit cards are generally limited to stores that can. It isn't a judgment on the product: the same item can still be eligible.

Can I split a Best Buy order between my FSA card and another card?

Not online. BestBuy.com takes one credit or debit card per order, so an eligible item has to be its own order, paid by one card.

How do I get a Best Buy receipt for an HSA or FSA claim?

Sign in to your Best Buy account, open your orders, choose See details & receipt, then Print receipt. Plan administrators want an itemized receipt, not a card statement. Buy through Caeli and the itemized receipt and any LMN are kept together for you.

What happens if I return an HSA or FSA purchase to Best Buy?

Best Buy refunds most returns the way you paid, though it refunds a debit card without a major card logo by check above $250. For an order placed through Caeli, reply to your Caeli order confirmation email to start the return; Best Buy's return policy applies.

Are the hearing aids at Best Buy HSA or FSA eligible?

Yes. Hearing aids are listed as medical care in IRS Publication 502, which doesn't separate prescription from over-the-counter ones, and Best Buy gives every shopper a 60-day return window on them. Caeli shows coverage on the product page.

Shop Best Buy like your benefits cover it, because they might.

Install Caeli, shop Best Buy as usual, and let it show you what your HSA or FSA covers. Then enjoy cleaner air, headphones that leave your ears open, or a walk you can take at home.
