What to Buy With an FSA When You Have $500 Left
Five hundred dollars buys the good version: a heated Theragun, an FDA-cleared acne mask, Normatec compression or a smart ring. And with an LMN for a condition you already have, it reaches an air purifier, an ergonomic chair or a walking pad. Every pick fits $500 on its own.

The quick answer
What should you buy with $500 left in your HSA or FSA?
One premium device that fits $500 on its own, from a Theragun to a light therapy mask.
With a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) for a condition you have, the same $500 also covers an air purifier, an ergonomic chair, a smart scale or a walking pad.
Jump to the picksEstimated pre-tax savings: about $14 to $150 per item, at a 30% combined tax rate.
Caeli handles the LMN at checkout: a telehealth intake in under 3 minutes.
The $500 question
Enough for the thing you'd never buy after tax
Five hundred dollars is where an FSA balance stops being a pharmacy run. It buys the good version of things people want and put off: Therabody's heated Theragun, Dr. Dennis Gross's LED face mask, Hyperice's Normatec compression, an Oura ring. These are premium products, and premium is exactly where pre-tax money goes furthest.
Each pick below fits $500 on its own, so you don't need to fill a cart to use the balance. Buy the one that fits your life, or two smaller ones. And if a condition is already in the picture, such as asthma, back pain or high blood pressure, an LMN reaches further: an air purifier, an ergonomic chair, a walking pad, a cooling bed system.
The rule behind all of it is short. IRS Publication 502 counts the costs of "diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease" as medical care, and leaves out things that are "merely beneficial to general health". A device made to treat acne qualifies as it is. Something people also buy for comfort, like a chair or an air purifier, qualifies when it is used for a diagnosed condition, and the LMN is how you show that.
You don't have to remember which is which. On the product you're looking at, Caeli shows whether your benefits cover it, and handles the LMN when one is needed.
No LMN needed
Five things worth the whole balance
These go on your HSA or FSA card with no LMN; the ring needs a medical reason, explained below. The Theragun is the obvious splurge; the other four are less obvious ones your benefits also cover.

The splurge
Therabody Theragun Prime Plus
Sore backs, necks and legs that want heat as well as massage
Therabody's Prime Plus adds a heated attachment with three heat levels to five massage speeds, so heat and percussion work on a sore muscle together. It comes with four attachments, runs about 150 minutes per charge, and connects over Bluetooth to Coach in the Therabody app for recovery routines.

Therabody SmartGoggles
Tension headaches that follow you to bed
Therabody's eye mask combines heat, vibration and compression, and a sensor syncs the vibration to your heart rate. Therabody aims it at headaches, stress and sleep; it runs 180 minutes per charge on USB-C.

Acne treatment is what makes the DRx mask a medical purchase; the American Academy of Dermatology notes that FDA-approved home blue and red light devices can treat pimples, though they are less powerful than a dermatologist's. Our red light therapy guide goes further, into panels for skin and wraps for joint pain. If stiff joints are your reason, our arthritis and joint stiffness guide covers the heat and TENS devices that qualify as they are.
The ring is the one pick with a condition attached. Under the IRS's FAQ on wearables (Q15), a tracker is a medical expense when you buy it "primarily to assist in the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of a specific disease", and "a generalized desire to monitor or improve health is not sufficient". No LMN is required; insomnia, high blood pressure or a clinician's recommendation is the kind of reason that counts. Our smart ring guide compares Oura with subscription-free rings, and if you'd rather wear a watch, the Garmin guide applies the same test to a Forerunner. And if sleep is the reason behind the SmartGoggles, the Eight Sleep guide shows how an LMN for insomnia reaches a smart bed cover.
What an LMN unlocks
If you have a health condition, $500 goes further
This is the part of the benefit that is easy to miss. A Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) is a clinician's note that ties a product to a diagnosed condition, and it turns everyday things that also help treat that condition into medical expenses. Asthma, eczema, chronic back pain, high blood pressure and insomnia are common, and each of them opens a category of products that fits inside $500.
The usual route is a doctor's visit and a co-pay. With Caeli it is a telehealth intake of a few questions, under 3 minutes, and a licensed clinician reviews and signs, usually in minutes. The LMN is dated before you buy, names your condition, and covers the product and similar ones for 12 months. On the Body Scan below, the shop estimates the tax saving at about $150; your actual saving depends on your tax bracket, your plan and IRS rules.
How an LMN works
These are some of the conditions a clinician can cite for the six picks here, not the full list; which ones apply depends on the product. Caeli's intake takes under 3 minutes, a licensed clinician reviews and signs, usually in minutes, and the LMN is dated before your purchase.
Conditions a clinician can cite include:
- Asthma
- Allergic rhinitis
- Eczema (atopic dermatitis)
- Low back pain
- Sciatica
- High blood pressure
- Obesity
- Type 2 diabetes
- Heart failure
- Insomnia

Each of these has a Caeli's Picks guide of its own. For allergies and asthma, the HEPA air purifier guide ranks eight purifiers from Levoit, Coway and Austin Air, and the allergy guide goes past the medicine cabinet to bedding and mattress covers. For a back, the office chair guide goes all the way up to the Herman Miller Embody, and lower back pain at the desk adds the footrests and desk converters the same LMN supports. For blood pressure or weight, the walking pad guide and the smart scale guide go model by model.
For sleep, our bed cooling guide sets BedJet against Chilipad. For skin, the humidifier guide and the eczema guide show what a humidifier adds to the creams. And an LMN reaches past this list: ergonomic mice and keyboards for carpal tunnel, and supplements a clinician recommends for a diagnosed deficiency.
A diagnosis you already live with is often what turns a $500 air purifier, chair or walking pad into a pre-tax purchase, and Caeli gets the LMN inside the checkout.

How long you have
Carryover, grace period, or neither
The deadline rules decide how much hurry you're in. A Health FSA is "generally 'use-it-or-lose-it'", but IRS Publication 969 lets a plan offer a carryover or a grace period, never both. For 2026 the IRS allows a carryover of up to $680 (Rev. Proc. 2025-32), so $500 could roll over whole on a plan that uses the full amount, but it still has to be spent next year. A grace period gives you up to 2½ more months, to March 15 on a calendar-year plan; with neither, the money goes at the end of the plan year. A run-out period is only extra time to file claims. If you're changing jobs, unused money is usually forfeited when you leave, so see what happens to your FSA.
Keep the LMN and the itemized receipt together. For dual-use items like a purifier or a chair, Publication 502's strict reading counts only "the excess of the cost of the item in a special form over the cost of the item in normal form"; in practice most administrators process the full price against a valid LMN. Buy through Caeli and the record keeping is done for you: every Buy-with-Benefits purchase is vaulted in the Reimbursement Vault, itemized and audit-ready.
Questions
Frequently asked
Can $500 carry over in my FSA?
It can if your plan has a carryover and uses the full 2026 IRS maximum of $680; your plan may set a lower cap. The carried-over money still has to be spent next plan year.
Is a Theragun FSA eligible?
Therabody sells the Theragun Prime Plus as "HSA/FSA Accepted", and you can buy it with your HSA or FSA card without an LMN. Plans treat massage devices differently, so keep the receipt in case yours asks what it is for.
Do I need an LMN for an Oura Ring?
No. Under the IRS's wearables FAQ, a ring qualifies when you buy it for a specific condition or on a clinician's recommendation, not for general health. Keep a record of that reason; an LMN is the cleanest proof if you want one.
Can I get an LMN before my FSA deadline?
Usually, yes. Caeli's telehealth intake takes under 3 minutes and a licensed clinician usually signs in minutes. The LMN has to be dated before the purchase, so get it first, then buy.
What if I'm leaving my job?
Unused Health FSA money is generally forfeited when you leave, unless you continue coverage through COBRA. Spend it before your last day; see what happens to your FSA.
Does the run-out period give me more time?
Only to file claims. The purchase itself has to be made in the plan year, or in the grace period if your plan has one.
The good version, finally.
A warm Theragun on a sore back, a three-minute session under the mask, a quieter night with cleaner air: that is what $500 of money that was about to expire can become. Browse everything FSA eligible in the Caeli shop.
