ChiliPad / BedJet Cooling Systems: LMN Requirements for Night Sweats & Menopause

Chilipad and BedJet cool, or warm, the bed you already sleep in, and both can come out of your HSA or FSA. Here is what the LMN has to say when night sweats are the reason, the five systems worth buying, and how water compares with air.

The quick answer

Can you buy a ChiliPad or BedJet with your HSA or FSA for night sweats?

Yes, with an LMN for the sleep problem the night sweats cause.

A Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) has to name a diagnosed condition, such as insomnia. Menopause and night sweats on their own are not conditions a clinician can cite for a bed cooling system through Caeli.

Estimated pre-tax savings: about $8 to $728 per item, at a 30% combined tax rate.

Caeli handles the LMN at checkout: a telehealth intake in under 3 minutes.

Night sweats & your benefits

The LMN names your sleep, not your menopause

A mattress can only stay cool. A bed cooling system decides the temperature. Sleepme's Chilipad runs chilled or warmed water through a thin pad on top of your mattress; BedJet blows air under the top sheet from a unit beneath the bed. Either way, each side of the bed can be set for the person sleeping on it, and a schedule can change it through the night. The Chilipad 2.0, Sleepme's 2026 redesign, and BedJet's air systems are the two names most shoppers compare, and they are premium buys, which is exactly where pre-tax HSA and FSA dollars help.

They are not eligible for everyone. A bed cooler is a personal-use item, and IRS Publication 502 covers one only when it is "used primarily to prevent or alleviate a physical or mental disability or illness." Sleeping cooler because you prefer it does not count. A diagnosed condition, documented in an LMN, does.

Night sweats are hot flashes that happen during sleep; The Menopause Society puts hot flashes at up to 80% of women, lasting a mean of 7 to 10 years (The Menopause Society). Menopause and night sweats are not on the list of conditions an LMN for a bed cooling system can cite. What night sweats often cause is: Mayo Clinic notes they can bring long-term sleep loss, and sleep research counts them among the main drivers of insomnia in the menopause transition (Sleep Medicine Clinics, 2018). So when night sweats keep waking you, the diagnosis your clinician can cite is the insomnia they cause.

How an LMN works

Usually an LMN means a doctor's appointment, often a co-pay, and a request for the letter. With Caeli it happens at checkout: a telehealth intake in under 3 minutes, and a licensed clinician reviews and signs, usually in minutes. The LMN is dated before you buy, names your condition, and covers the system and similar products for 12 months. If you already have one of these conditions, it can be the one on the letter. The conditions below are common examples, not the full list.

Conditions a clinician can cite include:

  • Insomnia
  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • Restless legs syndrome
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Low back pain

You don't have to keep any of this straight. On the product you are looking at, Caeli shows whether your benefits cover it and handles the LMN when one is needed.

The picks

Five ways to a cooler bed: water or air

The first decision is how the system cools. Water runs colder: the Chilipad 2.0 cools the bed to 55°F whatever the room is doing, while the budget Cube works relative to the room, about 10°F below it. Water systems ask for distilled water and a regular clean. Air needs no water at all and, as it moves under the sheet, dries sweat as well as cooling; BedJet itself says its method is overwhelmed in bedrooms regularly over 78 to 79°F and recommends air conditioning first in a hotter room. Both brands can give each partner their own side, and none of these picks needs a subscription.

One honest caveat: the evidence for cooling beds is early. In a small study, 15 women with frequent hot flashes slept on a cooling mattress pad for eight weeks; hot flashes fell by about half and sleep scores improved, but there was no comparison group and the maker supported the research (Menopause, 2022). A bed cooler supports sleep within your clinician's care plan; it does not replace treatment for the hot flashes themselves.

Beyond the bed

The same diagnosis, the rest of the bedroom

An insomnia diagnosis reaches past the bed cooler. A weighted blanket qualifies on the same diagnosis, and a blackout sleep mask needs no LMN at all. For the hot flash itself, during the day or at night, the cooling mattress guide covers a wrist device that needs no LMN, and if you want a cover that also tracks your sleep, see the Eight Sleep Pod.

Before you claim

Three details for the paperwork

The system itself is what qualifies. BedJet lists accessories, parts and extended warranty plans as not eligible (its Cloud Sheets do qualify), so treat replacement parts and protection plans as out-of-pocket unless your plan says otherwise. On the BedJet bundle, the adjustable frame is the dual-use part. Read strictly, Publication 502 counts only "the excess of the cost of the item in a special form over the cost of the item in normal form"; in practice most administrators process the full price against a valid LMN, and your plan administrator can tell you how they treat it.

Keep the LMN, dated before you buy, and the itemized receipt together; that is what a claim or an audit asks for. Buy through Caeli and that part is done for you: every Buy-with-Benefits purchase is vaulted in the Reimbursement Vault, itemized and audit-ready.

Questions

Frequently asked

Does menopause itself qualify for an LMN for a ChiliPad or BedJet?

No. Menopause, hot flashes and night sweats are not conditions an LMN for a bed cooling system can cite. When night sweats keep waking you, the sleep problem they cause, diagnosed as insomnia, is, and so are obstructive sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, fibromyalgia and back pain.

ChiliPad or BedJet: which is better for night sweats?

Water (Chilipad) runs colder, and the 2.0 holds its temperature in a warm room (the budget Cube works about 10°F below the room), but needs distilled water and cleaning. Air (BedJet) dries sweat as it cools and needs no water, but BedJet says it struggles in bedrooms regularly over 78 to 79°F. Both are HSA/FSA eligible with an LMN, and both offer a separate side for each partner.

Are replacement parts and protection plans HSA/FSA eligible?

Usually not. BedJet lists accessories, parts and extended warranty plans as not eligible, though its Cloud Sheets qualify. Buy the complete system you need with the LMN, and keep the LMN with the receipt.

Will my LMN cover a second unit or a weighted blanket later?

An LMN through Caeli covers the product and similar ones for 12 months, so a second bed cooler later in the year can rely on it, and a weighted blanket qualifies on the same insomnia diagnosis. Check that the LMN predates each purchase.

Do I need a new mattress for a ChiliPad or BedJet?

No. Both work on the mattress you already have: the Chilipad pad goes on top of it, and the BedJet unit sits under the bed and blows air beneath your sheet. If your mattress is part of the problem, a cooling mattress can also be HSA/FSA eligible with an LMN.

Cooler nights, on pre-tax money.

Here is to waking up because the alarm went off, not because you were too hot. If night sweats have turned into a diagnosed sleep problem, a bed cooler can come out of dollars you have already set aside. Browse the sleep picks and let Caeli handle the LMN.
