Perimenopause & Menopause Relief: What OTC Products, Cooling Gear, and Hormone Tests Are Covered?

Hormone trackers you use at home, wearables that ease a hot flash, and beds that run cold all night: menopause care has a new generation of products, and much of it can come out of your HSA or FSA. Here is what qualifies with no paperwork, what an LMN unlocks, and what to bring to your doctor.

The quick answer

Can you use your HSA or FSA for menopause products?

Yes: hormone tests, hot flash devices, and period and bladder care need no paperwork.

Bed cooling systems and menopause supplements qualify with a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN), and your prescriptions, including hormone therapy, are covered too.

Estimated pre-tax savings: about $10 to $210 per item, at a 30% combined tax rate.

Caeli handles the LMN at checkout: a telehealth intake in under 3 minutes.

Menopause & your benefits

More of the menopause toolkit is covered than most people think

Menopause care has caught up. Mira and Proov make hormone trackers you use at home over days, not a single test strip. Embr makes a wristband that sends cooling waves to the inside of your wrist when a hot flash starts. Sleepme and BedJet build systems that keep the bed itself cool all night. Hot flashes affect up to 80% of women in the transition, according to The Menopause Society, and much of this gear can come out of an HSA or FSA, where the tax saving is roughly 30%, depending on your bracket and plan.

Here is how the IRS sorts it. Publication 502 counts the costs of "diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease," including diagnostic devices, so at-home hormone tests and hot flash devices qualify with no paperwork. Publication 969 adds over-the-counter medicine and menstrual care products, which matter when perimenopause makes periods heavier or less predictable. Things everyone can use, like a cooling bed, and supplements qualify when they treat a diagnosed condition, which takes an LMN.

The biggest item may be the one you already get from a doctor. Prescribed medicines are medical care under Publication 502, so hormone therapy and the non-hormonal prescriptions for hot flashes can be paid from your HSA or FSA. The Menopause Society calls hormone therapy the most effective treatment for bothersome hot flashes; the products below work alongside that care, not instead of it.

You don't have to sort any of this yourself. On the product you're looking at, Caeli shows whether your benefits cover it, and gets the LMN when one is needed.

The picks

Seven picks for the transition, no LMN needed

Mira Hormone Monitor: Ultra4 Kit for Perimenopause

Editor's pick

Mira Hormone Monitor: Ultra4 Kit for Perimenopause

Seeing your own hormone pattern before you see your doctor

A monitor and test wands that read four hormones from one urine sample: FSH, LH, and markers of estrogen and progesterone, with results in about 16 minutes. Because FSH swings from day to day in perimenopause, Mira has you test across two cycles, and its app charts the pattern for you. It tracks; it doesn't diagnose, so take the chart to your clinician. No LMN needed.

With an LMN

What an LMN unlocks: cooler nights and targeted supplements

Night sweats are where many women want the most help, and the tools many women reach for sit in the IRS's dual-use zone: a bed that cools itself, or a supplement built for the transition. They qualify with a Letter of Medical Necessity, and the diagnosis is often one you already have. Insomnia supports a bed cooling system; menopausal symptoms themselves support the supplements. One LMN covers the product and similar ones for 12 months.

BedJet 3 Climate Comfort Sleep System

BedJet 3 Climate Comfort Sleep System

Night sweats, by air

A bedside unit that moves air under your covers to carry heat away, or warms it to heat the bed, on hour-by-hour schedules you set in the app or with the remote. BedJet notes it works best in rooms below 79°F. With an LMN, for example for insomnia.

Sleepme Chilipad Cube

Night sweats, by water

A water-cooled mattress pad that brings your side of the bed to about 10°F below the room, as low as 60°F, set with a simple remote and no app. With an LMN, for example for insomnia. Our bed cooling guide compares it with the rest of the Chilipad and BedJet range.

How an LMN works

Usually an LMN means a doctor's appointment, often a co-pay, and asking for the letter. With Caeli it happens at checkout for every product in this section: a telehealth intake in under 3 minutes, then a licensed clinician reviews and signs, usually in minutes. The LMN is dated before you buy and names your condition. The conditions here are a few common examples, not the full list.

Conditions a clinician can cite include:

  • Menopausal symptoms
  • Insomnia
  • Anxiety disorder
  • Depression
  • Osteoporosis
See the full list and get your LMN

There is more where these came from. If you would rather cool the whole mattress, our hot flashes and cooling mattress guide covers that route, and the Eight Sleep Pod guide is the splurge. For the brain fog many women report in the transition, see brain health supplements and the LMN.

Make the most of it

Plan the year around your care

A cooling bed is a dual-use item: read strictly, Publication 502 counts only the cost above an ordinary version, though most administrators process the full price against a valid LMN. Keep the itemized receipt, and the LMN where one is needed, dated before you buy. Buy through Caeli and that part is done for you: every Buy-with-Benefits purchase is vaulted in the Reimbursement Vault, itemized and audit-ready.

Questions

Frequently asked

Can a home test tell me if I'm in perimenopause?

Not on its own. The FDA notes that FSH levels rise and fall during the cycle, so a home test can't detect perimenopause by itself. Multi-day trackers like Mira and Proov show your pattern over time, which is useful to bring to your clinician, who makes the diagnosis.

Is hormone therapy HSA/FSA eligible?

Yes. Prescribed medicines are medical care under IRS Publication 502, so hormone therapy and prescription non-hormonal treatments for hot flashes can be paid from your HSA or FSA, along with the visits where your clinician prescribes them.

Is Embr Wave HSA/FSA eligible?

Yes, with no LMN. Embr Wave is sold to relieve hot flashes, and the shop lists it as HSA/FSA eligible. You can pay with your HSA or FSA card in the Caeli shop.

Are menopause supplements HSA/FSA eligible?

With an LMN. The IRS counts a supplement only when a medical practitioner recommends it to treat a diagnosed condition, and menopausal symptoms are one Caeli's LMN intake accepts for supplements. Without a diagnosis, a supplement doesn't qualify.

Is the Clearblue menopause test still available?

Not for long. Clearblue is discontinuing its Menopause Stage Indicator, and its app stopped being supported on September 1, 2026. Mira and Proov are the multi-hormone trackers to look at instead.
