What to Buy With an FSA When You Have $250 Left
$250 still buys something good. Every pick here costs under $250 on its own, from a validated blood pressure monitor that needs no paperwork to an air purifier you can cover with an LMN. First, check whether you need to spend it at all.

The quick answer
What HSA/FSA-eligible products can you buy with $250 left in your FSA, and by when?
One item under $250: a BP monitor needs no LMN; an air purifier or humidifier takes one.
The deadline depends on your plan. With a carryover, a $250 balance may roll into next year; with a grace period you get up to 2½ more months (mid-March on a calendar-year plan); with neither, spend it by the end of the plan year.
Jump to the picksEstimated pre-tax savings: about $10 to $75 per item, at a 30% combined tax rate.
Caeli handles the LMN at checkout: a telehealth intake in under 3 minutes.
Your deadline
First: do you have to spend it now?
$250 is still a decent budget, and it reaches further than most people expect. With no paperwork it covers a clinically validated blood pressure monitor, an over-the-counter glucose sensor or a red light therapy panel. With a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) it reaches a HEPA air purifier, a bedside humidifier, a vertical mouse or a rowing machine. Every product below costs under $250 on its own, so pick the one or two that fit your life, not the whole list.
Before you spend it, though, find out what your plan does with leftover money, because at $250 the answer may be "nothing, yet." A Health FSA is "generally 'use-it-or-lose-it'", but IRS Publication 969 lets a plan offer a carryover or a grace period, not both. For 2026 the IRS allows a carryover of up to $680 (Rev. Proc. 2025-32), so on a plan that uses the full amount, a $250 balance rolls into next year whole. Your plan may set a lower cap, so check. A grace period gives you up to 2½ months after the plan year, which is March 15 for a calendar-year plan. With neither, the money goes at the end of the plan year. And a run-out period is only extra time to file claims, not to shop.
Either way, you don't have to remember which items count. On the product you are looking at, Caeli shows whether your benefits cover it, on any site.
No LMN needed
Under $250, no paperwork
These need no LMN, and the rule behind that is short: IRS Publication 502 counts "devices used in diagnosing and treating illness and disease" as medical care, and sunscreen is regulated as an over-the-counter drug. The ring and the glucose sensor carry one condition, explained just below the picks. You can buy all of them with your benefit card in the Caeli shop.

The ring and the glucose sensor are wearables, and the IRS has a specific test for those (FAQ Q15): one counts as medical care when you buy and use it primarily for a specific disease, and the facts that count include a clinician's recommendation, a diagnosis, abnormal test results or risk factors. "A generalized desire to monitor or improve health is not sufficient." If that is you, keep the record with the receipt.
Caeli's Picks goes deeper on each. Our blood pressure monitor guide sets the Evolv against Withings' BPM Vision and the KardiaMobile EKG. The prediabetes guide builds an A1C plan around the Stelo. Our RingConn guide compares the Gen 2 Air with the newer Gen 3 and the Oura Ring 5, and the red light therapy guide covers panels and wraps for skin and joint pain. For sun care, see the best HSA-eligible sunscreens.
With an LMN
What an LMN unlocks, each under $250
This is the part of an FSA most people overlook. Many products that help with a diagnosed condition are HSA/FSA eligible with an LMN, a clinician's letter that ties the product to the condition. Allergies or asthma can support an air purifier or a humidifier; carpal tunnel or low back pain, ergonomic gear; high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or obesity, a smart scale or a rowing machine. If you already live with one of these, an LMN is what connects that condition to the product.
Usually that letter means a doctor's visit and a co-pay. With Caeli, the telehealth intake takes under 3 minutes, a licensed clinician reviews it and usually signs in minutes, and the LMN is dated before you buy, which is what makes it count. It covers the product and similar ones for 12 months.
The air you breathe, the sleep you get. Four picks for the bedroom and the kitchen cabinet.

Coway Airmega 200M (AP-1518R)
Allergy season, in a bedroom or home office
A compact purifier with a pre-filter, a deodorization filter and a HEPA filter, an auto mode that sets the fan speed by the particles in the air, and an air-quality light. Coway rates it for 361 sq ft at 4.8 air changes an hour, and the HEPA filter lasts up to 12 months.

Caeli's Picks has more on each. How an LMN works
A few of the conditions a clinician can cite for these picks, not the full list; which ones apply depends on the product. One diagnosis can support more than one pick here: asthma, for the humidifier and the purifier, or type 2 diabetes, for the scale and the rower.
Conditions a clinician can cite include:
- Asthma
- Allergic rhinitis
- Eczema (atopic dermatitis)
- Insomnia
- Anxiety disorder
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Low back pain
- Obesity
- Type 2 diabetes
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol

You don't have to match diagnoses to products yourself. On the product you're looking at, Caeli flags whether your benefits cover it and handles the LMN when one is needed.
Before you buy
Your other accounts, and the fine print
Keep the itemized receipt for everything you buy with your FSA, and keep the LMN with it for the picks that need one. For dual-use items like the purifier, the humidifier or the blanket, Publication 502, read strictly, counts only "the excess of the cost of the item in a special form over the cost of the item in normal form"; most administrators process the full price against a valid LMN. Buy through Caeli and the record keeping is done for you: every Buy-with-Benefits purchase is vaulted in the Reimbursement Vault, itemized and audit-ready.
Questions
Frequently asked
Will my $250 FSA balance carry over?
Only if your plan has a carryover. For 2026 the IRS allows up to $680, but your plan can set a lower cap. If your plan offers a grace period instead, you have up to 2½ more months to spend it.
Can a plan have both a carryover and a grace period?
No. IRS Publication 969 says a plan with a carryover cannot also offer a grace period. Some plans offer neither.
What does an LMN add to a $250 budget?
It opens the products that qualify only for a diagnosed condition: an air purifier or humidifier for allergies or asthma, ergonomic gear for carpal tunnel or back pain, a smart scale or rower for obesity, type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure. Every one in this guide costs under $250 on its own.
Is a blood pressure monitor HSA/FSA eligible?
Yes. A home blood pressure monitor is a diagnostic device, and the IRS counts devices used to diagnose and treat illness as medical care. No LMN is needed.
Is a smart ring HSA/FSA eligible?
When you buy and use it primarily for a specific disease, such as on a clinician's recommendation or because of a diagnosis. The IRS says a general wish to monitor your health is not enough, so keep the record of why you bought it.
Is sunscreen FSA eligible?
Yes. Sunscreen is regulated as an over-the-counter drug, so it can be bought with an FSA. More in our sunscreen guide.
