Withings Body Scan & Smart Scales: Navigating Heart, Weight & Diabetes LMNs
A Withings Body Scan costs as much as a phone. If a clinician ties it to heart failure, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or obesity, your HSA or FSA can pay for it with pre-tax money. Here is what qualifies, the five scales worth it, and the heart gear that needs no LMN at all.

The quick answer
Yes, with an LMN. On its own, a scale is a personal-use item.
A smart scale is HSA/FSA eligible when a clinician writes an LMN tying it to a diagnosed condition, such as heart failure, high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes.
Estimated pre-tax savings: about $20 to $180 per item, at a 30% combined tax rate.
Caeli handles the LMN at checkout: a telehealth intake in under 3 minutes.
The dilemma
Your doctor wants you on the scale, and the good ones cost hundreds
Maybe a cardiologist has asked you to weigh yourself every morning. Maybe your doctor wants the weight off to bring your blood pressure down, or you are on a GLP-1 and want to know whether you are losing fat or muscle. Either way you are looking at a Withings Body Scan, it costs as much as a phone, and the product page says "HSA/FSA eligible". The question Withings owners keep asking online is whether that means they still need an LMN.
They do. The tax code covers amounts paid "for the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease" (IRC §213(d)). A bathroom scale is the textbook item "ordinarily used for personal, living, or family purposes", which IRS Publication 502 excludes unless it is used primarily to alleviate or prevent an illness. The same publication counts weight loss as medical care when it treats "a specific disease diagnosed by a physician (such as obesity, hypertension, or heart disease)". The diagnosis is what makes the scale eligible, and the LMN is how you show it.
First things first
What makes a scale eligible
Administrators want the same chain of reasoning the IRS does: a diagnosed condition, a clinician's recommendation, and a device that answers it. For heart failure the link is direct. The American College of Cardiology's daily weight worksheet tells patients to weigh every morning and call their provider after a gain of 3 pounds or more in 24 hours, or more than 5 pounds in a week, because sudden gain can mean fluid building up. Any accurate scale does that job; the premium models add body composition and heart metrics on top.
For high blood pressure, obesity, metabolic syndrome or type 2 diabetes, the scale supports the weight-management plan a clinician has prescribed. For sarcopenia, segmental lean-mass tracking is the feature to cite; Withings pitches BodyFit and BodyScan 2 to GLP-1 users on exactly that point. Frame the scale as monitoring a clinician recommends for your condition, not as a treatment: Withings itself describes every metric except the ECG and AFib detection as general wellness.
How an LMN works
The usual route is an appointment with your doctor, often a co-pay, and a request for the LMN. With Caeli it happens at checkout: a telehealth intake in under 3 minutes, and a licensed clinician reviews and signs, usually in minutes. The LMN is dated before you buy and covers this product and similar ones for 12 months. The conditions below are examples a clinician may cite, not the full list.
Conditions a clinician can cite include:
- Heart failure
- High blood pressure
- Obesity
- Type 2 diabetes
- Metabolic syndrome
- Sarcopenia
The "HSA/FSA eligible" badge on a scale is not the rule. Your diagnosis is. Get the LMN first, dated before you buy.
The picks
Five Withings scales worth the LMN
Every scale here is HSA/FSA eligible with an LMN, and all five weigh up to 440 lb, recognize up to eight users and sync over Wi-Fi. They differ in what else they measure. Pick by what your clinician tracks: weight and heart rate, segmental muscle and fat, or a heart rhythm reading.

Editor's pick
BodyScan 2 Black
Heart and body composition in one morning scan
Withings' 2026 flagship, launched in the US in July. A retractable handle with a color display adds a 6-lead ECG through FDA-cleared software, fat and muscle across six body zones, Vascular Age and blood oxygen (SpO2). The battery is rechargeable, rated up to a year per charge.
Price
$600
Est. tax savings ~$180

Withings
HSA/FSA with LMNBody Scan Black
The same ECG for less
The original Body Scan uses the same FDA-cleared ECG software as BodyScan 2, with segmental composition across five zones and Vascular Age. It skips SpO2.

Withings
HSA/FSA with LMNBodyFit Black
Tracking lean mass while losing weight, or with sarcopenia
New for 2026: fat and muscle in six body zones, Vascular Age and visceral fat, with a handle and a rechargeable battery, but no ECG. Withings built it for GLP-1 users who want to see lean mass, not just weight.

Withings
HSA/FSA with LMNBody Comp Black
Heart metrics without the handle
Whole-body fat, muscle and bone mass with Vascular Age, standing heart rate and visceral fat. No handle, no segmental analysis and no ECG; it runs on four AAA batteries for about 15 months.

Withings
HSA/FSA with LMNBody Smart Black
Daily weigh-ins on a budget
The scale for a heart-failure weigh-in or a weight-loss plan: weight, body fat, visceral fat, BMR and standing heart rate. When the extras are not what your clinician asked for, it is the model some Withings owners recommend over the pricier ones.

One thing to know before you pay for the ECG: in the US it is prescription-gated. According to Withings, a board-certified cardiologist reviews your first recording before the feature unlocks, at no extra cost. The ECG is a reason to choose a Body Scan; it is not what the LMN rests on, which is the diagnosis the scale helps you monitor.
Beyond the scale
The heart gear that needs no LMN
A scale does not measure blood pressure, and BodyScan 2 says so: its blood-pressure notification tells you to confirm readings "with a clinically validated blood pressure monitor". The American Heart Association recommends a validated upper-arm cuff for home monitoring. These devices are HSA/FSA eligible outright, with no LMN, under Publication 502's rule for devices used in diagnosing and treating illness.

Good to know
Three details worth knowing
For an item bought "in a special form" because of a condition, Publication 502's strict reading counts "the excess of the cost of the item in a special form over the cost of the item in normal form". A basic bathroom scale is that normal form. In practice most administrators process the full price against a valid LMN; your plan administrator can tell you how they treat it.
Body-composition numbers from any home scale are estimates, and owners often find they differ from a gym machine. Withings' own advice is that trends over weeks matter more than any one number, which is also what a clinician watching your weight wants to see.
Some BodyScan 2 scores, such as Heart Age, need a Withings+ subscription. Buy the scale on your benefit card and keep the subscription as a separate purchase, so the claim covers the device alone. Keep the LMN and the itemized receipt together; when you buy through Caeli that is done for you, because every Buy-with-Benefits purchase is vaulted, itemized and audit-ready.
Questions
Frequently asked
Withings says the Body Scan is "HSA/FSA eligible". Do I still need an LMN?
Yes. A retailer's badge is not your administrator's rule, and a scale is a personal-use item until a diagnosis makes it medical care. Owners who claimed without an LMN report mixed results; with one tying the scale to your condition, the claim has what administrators ask for.
Does the Body Scan test for neuropathy?
No. In the US, Withings describes its foot-sensor nerve score as a wellness indicator, "not intended for medical diagnosis or to detect any disease". If you have diabetes, a clinician's foot exam is how neuropathy is checked; the LMN for a scale rests on type 2 diabetes or obesity.
Why doesn't the ECG work when I first set up the scale?
In the US it is a prescription feature. Withings has a board-certified cardiologist review your first recording before it unlocks, at no extra cost, so allow for that step.
Can I put the Withings+ subscription on my HSA?
Keep it off your benefit card. Buy the scale with HSA or FSA money and pay for the subscription separately, so your claim is for the device your LMN describes.
Is BodyScan 2 worth the upgrade over the original Body Scan?
Both have the same FDA-cleared ECG. BodyScan 2 adds SpO2 and a sixth body zone. If your clinician mainly wants daily weights, Body Smart does that job for a fraction of either.
Do I need an LMN for the blood-pressure monitor too?
No. Blood-pressure monitors and the KardiaMobile EKG are HSA/FSA eligible without one. Only the scale needs the LMN.
Can I get the LMN after I buy the scale?
Get it first. The LMN should be dated before the purchase to substantiate it, which is why Caeli issues it at checkout.
